Can Animal predict an Earthquakes?

Over the past half-century, earthquakes have been the leading cause of death from natural disasters and have imposed dramatic cultural, economic, and political impacts on society. Compounding their inherent physical hazard is how they strike suddenly without obvious warning, and how they possess a fatal attraction for humans most of the world’s largest cities lie in areas of major seismic activity. Let us see if science can provide us with a prediction, and there are some such as :

InSAR is one way to forecast quakes, but it is not the only one. While InSAR satellites merely improve the data available to orthodox seismology, there are other techniques that break with orthodoxy. One of these ideas is to look for surges in infrared (IR) radiation.

Electromagnetic variations have been observed after earthquakes, but despite decades of work, there is no convincing evidence of electromagnetic precursors to earthquakes.

Radon gas is constantly emitted through cracks in the Earth. On certain occasions, spikes in the emission of radon gas have been observed as an immediate precursor to an earthquake. Some scientists remain skeptical that the two are directly correlated, but enough correlation remains for this to be a continued source of study.

Some animal and insects for example red ants, snakes, rats, and spiders can feel the waves of organ, neon and radon gasses, these insects enjoy very strong senses that are not known to many. You can even measure the earthquake’s magnitude by examining their moves. They tend to run exactly opposite direction of the earthquakes.

Sky -quakes or mysterious booming noises are typical earthquake precursors. They may occur several days before a large quake. The cannon-like rumbling or a sonic boom phenomenon coming from the sky have been heard in several locations around the world but remains unexplained.

 “Earthquake lights are unlikely to be very helpful with earthquake prediction because they don’t seem to be reported all that often,” says Bruce Presgrave, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center. Earthquake lights have already been used to help predict quakes.

Can Animal Smell earthquakes? This is because they can smell the gases that are released before an earthquake happens. Lastly, deaf people can also sense earthquakes before they happen by using their sense of sight. This is because they can see the changes in the environment that happen before an earthquake happens.

The recent earthquake in Syria and turkey, many people witnessed severe birds and animal anxiety and activities.

Birds and bats might serve the purpose because of their ability to detect magnetic fields. This capability probably helps the creatures navigate –but it could also allow them to sense earthquakes before they strike. Since the late 1990s, it has been known that fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field occur before some earthquakes.

Al-Zalzalah 8 letters (Arabic: الزلزلة, al-zalzalah, meaning: “The Quake- earthquake“) is the 99th chapter (surah) of the Qur’an, composed of 8 Ayat or verses. And many other verses in Quran indicate and explained in detail. Indications among them; in mainstream Arabic ZAL means slipped and Zalah mean the greatest fall.

Zal an Arabic / Persian name means the White-haired person, reference of the people who get so scared when the large earthquakes hit earth that their hair turns white. Zalzalah they are 8 letters; name numerology is 7. In the bible you can find many examples such as;

 Mark-13-8: For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in diver’s places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE NUMBER 8 MEANING! To distract our attention from the earthquake for a moment.

In almost all systems of Numerology, number 8 is the number of renewals.

Many will discuss this number symbolizing money and power, but its vibration carries so much more. It’s true the power of the number 8 is almost always instrumental in building great empires, but it will just as soon destroy them.

Because of this, in its highest iteration, 8 is the number that represents balance. Just like the eternal flow of the infinity symbol (which is the same as the single digit 8 on its side), the energy of the eight must keep moving.

The Buddhist path is eightfold.

In China, eight Immortal Saints are revered.

In Hinduism, 8-fold geometry is used in the form of yantras, to represent the mother of a deity. She is formed of the four elements – Air, Fire, Water and Earth – and the four qualities used to describe them – Wet, Cold, Dry and Hot.

The same above deity is often depicted in Native American art and myth as (the eight-legged) Grandmother Spider, weaving her web of life.

The symbol of the ancient Sumerian Goddess Ishtar was the eight-pointed star.

In astrology, the planet Saturn vibrates to the frequency of the eight.

In music, 8 notes make up an octave and we refer to “octaves” as measurements for spiritual and dimensional evolution too.

In Numerology, it’s recognized that the number 8 is a symbol of the flow of energy. A lot of the time, this does mean money and personal power – this is the language we speak in our modern world. So, this number often pertains to the creation of money, to business, achievement, success, and influence, that’s why the Chinese love this number.

But one of the main missions and purposes of the number 8 is to learn how to use its influence for the greater good, and not just for personal gain.

Eight is a number that also tends to be rational and averse to risk: You’ll seldom find number 8 people dependent on good luck or ready to receive a miracle! Because this number will face setbacks, will fail and will, in all probability, lose it all more than once, it can be all too easy to sulk and drop even deeper. BUT… this number is all about flow and balance. Finding that resurgence is what it’s all about.

This year of the rabbit in Chinese calendar and the rabbit is very quick, some people say that it is associated with the earthquakes.

What about the birds, fish, and the animal Kingdome when it comes to predicts earthquakes?

The earliest reference we have to unusual animal behavior prior to a significant earthquake is from Greece in 373 BC. Rats, weasels, snake, and centipedes reportedly left their homes and headed for safety several days before a destructive earthquake. Anecdotal evidence abounds of animals, fish, birds, reptiles, and insects exhibiting strange behavior anywhere from weeks to seconds before an earthquake.

However, consistent and reliable behavior prior to seismic events, and a mechanism explaining how it could work, still eludes us. Most, but not all, scientists pursuing this mystery are in China or Japan.

We can easily explain the cause of unusual animal behavior seconds before humans feel an earthquake. Very few humans notice the smaller P wave that travels the fastest from the earthquake source and arrives before the larger S wave. But many animals with more keen senses are able to feel the P wave seconds before the S wave arrives. As for sensing an impending earthquake days or weeks before it occurs, that’s a different story.

Many animal including the dinosaurs have the infrasound hearing ability and that is very helpful survival tools to have to predicts any activity in nature including disasters before it happens and they can have enough time to run away from that area, of course only if they are about to be hit by a meteor and falling rocks from the sky, some actually avoided that a head of time such as elephants ancestors, as elephant one of the best infrasound detecting mammal.

Dolphins among many marine mammals like wheals, shark and oar fish can predicts the earthquakes days before it happens, they run opposite direction some washed-up on shores.

A wide variety of vertebrates already express “early warning” behaviors that we understand for other types of events, so it’s possible that a seismic-escape response could have evolved from this already-existing genetic predisposal.

An instinctive response following a P-wave seconds before a larger S wave is not a “huge leap”, so to speak, but what about other precursors that may occur days or weeks before an earthquake that we don’t yet know about?

If in fact there are precursors to a significant earthquake that we have yet to learn about (such as ground tilting, groundwater changes, electrical or magnetic field variations), indeed it’s possible that some animals could sense these signals and connect the perception with an impending earthquake.

However, much research still needs to be done on this subject.

There are many theories and investigations that claim abnormal animal behavior can help humans predict strong earthquakes. These stories have triggered the interest of researchers, who are using the latest technology to keep a tab on various animals that are said to predict earthquakes ahead of time. 

Martin Wikelski from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Germany has led a significant investigation into changing behavioral patterns amongst a group of animal’s days before an earthquake struck their respective habitats.

Wikelski planted sensors on different animals -six cows, five sheep, and two dogs in quake-prone northern Italy. He observed them for several months before and during a series of earthquakes hit their habitat.

Wikelski and his team collected the data and showed that a change in the behavior of farm animals 20 hours before an earthquake. The animals showed an unusually prolonged activity time – they were 50 percent more active within a time frame of 45 minutes compared to previous days.

With a series of calculations, the researchers rightly predicted an earthquake with a magnitude above 4.0. Using the same method, they predicted seven out of eight strong earthquakes.

Many animals can sense the P wave seconds before the S wave strikes. P waves can travel through liquids, solids and gases, while S waves only travel through solids. A small number of humans can sense the smaller P wave that travels the fastest from the earthquake source and arrives before the larger S wave. Is it possible for animals to develop a genetic tendency to forecast earthquakes and maintain this precautionary behavior despite varying degrees of seismic activities? The natural instinct of all animals is to either defend themselves from predators or escape the impending dangers they cannot thwart. 

The existing genetic makeup allows a wide variety of vertebrates to flag “early warning” behaviors for other types of events and it’s possible that some animals emulated that behaviour and transformed it into a seismic-escape response.

There are more than 180 publications reporting 700 records of abnormal or unusual animal behaviors prior to 160 earthquakes points to a significant correlation between these behaviors. 

Although seismologists and scientists are yet to find a coherent pattern in using animal behaviour as one of the tools to forecast major quakes, more research into this phenomenon could lead the desirable results. For example:

 Two dead oarfish washed up at a nature reserve in the Philippines on August 8, the day before a 6.6 quake hit the northern island of Luzon. Known in Japanese mythology as ‘the Messenger from the Sea God’s Palace’, local media started analyzing the link between the Dead Sea creatures appearing on the Philippines’ shores and seismic activity.

Certain animals, however, are said to possess a sixth sense for natural disasters like earthquakes. Researchers have long studied animals they believe can predict earthquakes in order to understand what they feel or hear before the earth shakes. It would be an invaluable prediction tool to better prepare for such disasters and significantly reduce injuries and deaths. Animal such as.


A study performed at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada and conducted by Dr. Stanley Coren found that some dogs can detect an earthquake using their incredible sense of hearing. He recorded an increase in activity and anxiety twenty-four hours prior to an earthquake in the Seattle area.

And according to the study, pointy-eared dogs possessed stronger detection abilities than floppy-eared dogs. Researchers believe that dogs can detect earthquakes due to their ability to hear extremely high frequencies which enable them to hear high-pitch sounds of rocks breaking beneath the earth – the predecessor of an earthquake.

But I think ultrasound ability give you less time to predict than the infrasound as with infrasound animal can predict the natural disaster before it happens by days.


Turns out, cows do much more than moo.

Researchers from Germany’s Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Behavioral Studies and the Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behavior at the University of Constance carried out an in-depth investigation of animals that can predict earthquakes.

Somewhere in Northern Italy where earthquakes are frequent, six cows, five sheep, and two dogs were fitted with small sensors in order for researchers to see whether these animals can actually forecast earthquakes. The investigation continued for several months. Researchers noted that cows become less active prior to an earthquake. In fact, they pretty much freeze shortly before an earthquake strikes.

Most likely, it’s due to cows being able to feel the ionization of the air or smell the gases released from the rocks before an earthquake.

Red Wood Ants

Even the smallest of creatures may be able to tell us whether an earthquake is approaching.

German scientists closely monitored red wood ants that were located at the seismically active Neuwied Basin in Eifel- Germany to learn more about their behavioral changes before an earthquake event. Using high-resolution cameras to monitor these ants 24/7, the study found that these little creatures changed their typical routine prior to an earthquake, becoming less active during the day and more active at night.

If you want to know when an earthquake is coming, hang out with a snake. According to the experts, snakes are the most sensitive to earthquakes. In other words, if anyone’s going to know, it’s probably going to be one of these slithering reptiles. The cobras are more sensitive.

When an earthquake is about to occur, snakes are said to exit their nests. If it’s a major earthquake, snakes will even collide with walls in a bid to escape. Snakes are so sensitive to earthquakes, they can sense one approaching from around 70 miles away, three to five days before it hits.

Some seismologists believe snakes can detect the p-wave generated by an earthquake, while others say it could be due to the increase in low frequency electromagnetic fields. And I think it is the infrasound and may be the infrared changes.

Toads may also be able to tell us whether an imminent earthquake is coming. The signs are all there for us to know whether a natural disaster is going to occur. As long as we watch and listen closely, we can definitely benefit from staying close to toads.

Toads are highly sensitive to weather changes, yet no odd weather occurred before the earthquake that would have led to the exodus of toads from their breeding grounds. What did change, however, were the Earth’s magnetic field and the amount of radon gas in the groundwater, which the planet’s crust burped out before the earthquake.

A colony of toads were studied, and the scientists found that they abandoned their mating site 74km from the epicenter of L’Aquila earthquake in Italy – three days before it happened. Toads only returned to the site 10 days later, following the end of the earthquake’s aftershocks.

Bats also reacts nervously before an earthquakes.


While there’s very little evidence showing a horse’s ability to detect earthquakes, there have been some instances in history that suggest the animal could possess predictive powers. In 1906, horses were said to run off in a panic ahead of the San Francisco earthquake. However, not all horses exhibited the same behavior before the event.

Some horses whinnied or snorted prior to the event, while others became frightened and ran away. Then there were some that screamed and shivered. It just goes to show that many animals have capabilities much deeper and more significant than we could ever imagine. Capabilities not even humans have!

In this month earthquake in turkey and Syria thousands of people reported and took videos to thousands of birds nervously flying in the sky few hours before the earthquake happened, birds may also be able to predict earthquakes. And there are quite a lot of instances that show that these winged creatures know.

Animals and birds may sense earthquake by various ways. Some animals may be sensitive to changes in the electromagnetic field that occur before an earthquake. Some may detect changes in barometric pressure, which can occur before an earthquake.

Take the Oklahoma earthquake in 2016. The quake struck at 7.03 am on September 3. Following the earthquake, researchers discovered that radar images showed a huge increase in the number of birds taking off 15 minutes ahead of the event. This suggests that the birds could have known that a quake was coming.

Then there was the 1975 quake in the Chinese city of Haicheng. Ahead of that event, there had been many strange animal behaviors reported, including geese flying into trees.

Hundreds of sightings of pigs started digging under the fences of their sites in China, and Latin America before an earthquake.


We already know that felines have some remarkable capabilities. But did you know that cats predict earthquakes, too, or at least – that’s what some scientists believe.

According to the hypothesis of experts, cats have a special sensitivity to the Earth’s magnetic fields and are able to feel minimal tremors, not perceptible to humans, which occur just before an earthquake of greater intensity.

In 2018, a viral video several cats trying to escape a Japanese cat cafe only 10 seconds prior to the Osaka earthquake. While there’s no conclusive proof that cats can predict earthquakes, there’s a lot of anecdotal evidence that does.

According to the experts, some of the most common cat behaviors before a quake include fleeing to safety, meowing loudly, and becoming anxious. So if you notice your kitty exhibiting one of these behaviors, it could mean a quake is approaching. Then again, it could just mean she’s hungry, sick, upset. I know my cat Ashley always knows when a storm will come almost by 2 to 3 hours.

Cows aren’t the only farm animal capable of detecting earthquakes. Sheep, too, are particularly sensitive to quakes. According to researchers, increased activity can be seen in sheep that detect earthquakes. If this excessive activity is sustained for more than an hour, it could be a sign that an earthquake is on its way, they run from one side to another and trying to find a safe spot.


Elephants are also said to show unusual movements and screaming pattern and warning other elephants with infrasound, prior to earthquakes. While research is still limited, scientists believe elephants may be able to tell us whether an earthquake is coming, again as I said due to the ability of the elephant of detecting the infrasound before any disaster.

A growing global network of infrasound arrays of the International Monitoring System (IMS) offers the possibility of detection of infrasound from earthquakes globally with possible multiarray detections for many. Future use of the IMS could rapidly expand the database of detections and correspondingly provide a greater source for analysis.

It is an interesting possibility for the future is the incorporation of infrasonic with seismic methods for earthquake analysis. Infrasound signals from extended, and possibly unmonitored, regions away from an epicenter could provide important data on surface motions.

As a doctoral candidate in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University with a focus on understanding earthquake phenomena, the most common question people ask me is, “So, when is the next big earthquake going to happen?” Unfortunately, the answer is somewhat dissatisfying because the truth is, we really don’t know.

Why is this the case? What is so special about earthquakes that make them so difficult to forecast? Will we ever uncover a reliable prediction method? Answers to these questions are the Holy Grail of earthquake science and, if answered, could protect society from the next big earthquake catastrophe.

The Earth’s rigid outermost layer consists of seven major pieces called plates. These plates move around because they are riding on top of a slowly flowing layer called the mantle, similar to saltine crackers floating on top of a bowl of thick soup. These plates move at about the same rate as your fingernails grow (i.e., centimeters per year).

When these plates collide with, pull apart from, or slide against each other, energy gets stored in the rigid outer layer—this is a similar phenomenon to compressing a spring. This energy is released when it surpasses a certain threshold, causing the ground to shake. This shaking of the Earth’s surface from a sudden release of energy is called an earthquake.

The majority of the world’s earthquakes occur along the plates’ boundaries, such as along the outer edges of the Pacific Ocean, colloquially known as thering of fire. 

The tremendous forces with which these plates crunch past each other, however, extend beyond the immediate vicinity of the boundary. For example, the crust beneath Los Angeles, which lies ~30 miles from the active plate boundary (i.e., the San Andreas Fault), is full with cracks.

These cracks, which are called faults, store and release energy in the form of earthquakes. California’s crust is similar to a smashed glass windowpane in which the San Andreas Fault is just the most prominent crack.

Now for the more complicated part of the question: when will the next big earthquake occur?

Timing is the most difficult challenge in the game of earthquake prediction. In fact, two of the theories that inform our (best) predictions could be flawed.

The first theory is called Elastic Rebound Theory, which states that the Earth’s crust will bend and deform under intense stress until, eventually, it breaks under the strain. Slippage along the break (i.e., an earthquake) allows the rock on each side to rebound to a less deformed state and release the stored energy, allowing the process of accumulating strain to begin anew.

The second theory is called the Characteristic Earthquake, which describes how the most studied earthquake-generating faults seem to have distinct segments. These segments repeatedly rupture to produce earthquakes of similar magnitudes after accumulating a similar amount of strain in the intervening period between earthquake events.

Assuming these two theories always held, you could predict when the next earthquake would happen based on 1) the location of greatest unrelieved strain, 2) the time since the last earthquake on the fault, and 3) precise knowledge of the fault zone (which we may never achieve for many areas).

My best experience has been Indio California, Okotoks Alberta, Baghdad city , and many other places in Greece and North Canada. (yes I do believe spirits can hurt you so you have to be careful not to provoke or challenge a spirit ). I won’t tell you the whole story now but you are more than welcome to ask me on a ghost hunt. I am now looking forward to meeting many more people, all looking for that ‘experience’ that could possibly convince them that there is something more to life than we first thought. When people ask if I believe in ghosts, I say I am a skeptical believer. I have had many encounters with spirit forms and believe what I have seen to be real and unexplainable. I have Ph.D. in Public Health from the USA, Master degree in Medical Ultrasound and BSc Degree in Diagnostic Imaging from Charles Sturt University Australia, BSc in Physics, and Radiology diploma from Iraq, Pharmacy diploma. Radiography diploma from London Ontario, Diploma in Natural Health from Quebec, Canada. Radiation physics from Australia, I studied the infra and ultrasound in the animal kingdom.P resented more than 20 lectures in Iraq, Greece, Germany, South Korea, Japan, Canada and I am the peer reviewer for the radiographer journal in UK, Netherlands, and South Africa. Earned the 3rd award for excellence in ultrasound - Canada 2005. I am also armature archaeologist, painter, calligrapher, and used to run acting theater play in Iraq- Baghdad, wrote, directed and acted in more than 27 plays. So debunking come naturally in my science and technology back round, and not like other debunking people around you who use Google for their search and call them self-debunkers, It doesn't work that way. In the near future, I will run live internet ghost hunts with night vision cameras giving users at home the chance to watch the spooky footage on, in my nights out. I look forward to seeing you all soon on one of our many events! I loved reading ghost stories and sitting on my own in the dark watching horror films. However. I Can decode dreams, and I see spirits in my dreams. I like to look at things from a scientific point of view and try to rule out all rational possibilities before concluding that events are paranormal. However, I do try to keep an open mind on all investigations. I started taking part in investigations since 1986; my first investigation usually any house, apartment that I move in or my friend's places.
